Replacing Window Sash on Andersen Narrowline Double Hung Windows
An alternative to replacing your old widows or installing new vinyl windows is to replace the sash, side tracks and balances with new ones. With these replacement parts installed your home will be more energy efficient and will help stop the air drafts and leaks from around your windows. Enclosed are photos and pictures showing some details of an installed Andersen Perma-Shield Narrowline window.

The detailed pictures may help a do it yourselfer better understand how to remove side jamb liners and prep for replacing the sash. Andersen sells replacement parts and conversion kits for 200 Series windows that will match up to your older windows. This may be an alternative to totally replacing your existing windows.

If you are handy and want to attempt to take out the old sash to get an idea of how to do it yourself, then here are some tips on how to remove the jambs and sashes. Also shown is the location of the balance springs and how to access them in the head of the window. I checked the windows in my own house and decided to replace the whole window and frame.

- Slightly pry the interior trim away on the sides from the window frame.
- Fully lower the upper and lower sash of the double hung window, pushing it down to expose the small silver screws in the sides of vinyl jamb liner.
- The jamb liners on each side of the window are 2 separate pieces- one on the top half and one on the bottom half.
- Remove the screws on the left hand side of the vinyl jamb on the top sections of the track which hold the sash into place. Keep the screws and store in a safe place.
- Next, fully raise the upper and lower sash to expose screws in bottom section of liner and remove the two screws.
- Next, gently pry away the bottom liner from the frame and remove.
- Slide sash down and pull left side out to release from window frame. Stop here and Do Not Cut the balance cord if you are going to reassemble these sashes.
- Before reassembling, pry back the head jamb liner parting stop to expose the balance box within mounted in the head of the window jamb. If cords are broke or box is rusty you may need to order a new one.
- You can stop at this point and reinstall the parts.

If you have accomplished this with little or no trouble, you should consider doing it yourself and order replacement sash or a conversion kit for one window and changing out the parts. Refer to Andersen Windows for information, parts included in kit and a more detailed installation procedure for window conversion.
